Chapel Yard Pottery stands in the centre of the delightful historic village of Abbotsbury on the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. It's the workplace of the accomplished potter Richard Wilson whose striking creations add colour and grace to any interior décor. Richard's pots are all hand thrown on a wheel, or slab pressed and cut to shape using a traditional terracotta clay which is then dipped in a white clay slip to give a brighter canvas on which to decorate. With a combination of brushes and slip trailers, he builds up a pattern with coloured slips.

Some designs echo the folds and rhythms of the landscape with colours that reflect the contrast between sea and shore in this part of Dorset. Other patterns are abstract shapes that he discovers within the pots themselves _ "form leading to painting," he says. Finally, all his pots are given a transparent glaze and fired to 1,120oC in a gas kiln. The Pottery _ where you can watch Richard at work _ is open from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday; the gallery is also open during these hours.
