Just a mile south of the ancient village of
Muchelney,
John Leach, the eldest grandson of Bernard Leach, continues
the family tradition at his own thatched-roofed
Muchelney Pottery. Like his father, David Leach, and his grandfather before
him, John hand-throws his distinctive stoneware pots
which are
then fired, in age-old fashion, using a three-chambered
wood-fired kiln. The pots are practical, both microwave and dishwasher proof, and have a unique quality that comes from their
warmly toasted finishes and interior glazes. No two pots are
ever identical, further adding to their charm, and the range
of tableware extends from jugs, casseroles and plates to
bread crocks, chicken bricks and pasta pods. John's wife,
Lizzie, manages the attractive Pottery Shop where a full range of
the pots can be bought.
John's original signed designs, including his `Black
Mood' pots, are on display and for sale in the recently-opened
John Leach Gallery adjacent to the shop. Individual pots by Nick
Rees and Mark Melbourne, the other two potters in the
Muchelney team, and work by invited artists and sculptors may also
be bought in the gallery. Tours of the workshop can be
arranged and there are usually two public kiln openings a year.
