The ancient market town of Shepton Mallet is full of interesting things to see, and Bowlish House Hotel is an ideal base for visitors. Built in 1732 for a prosperous clothier, it was subsequently the home of generations of top brass from the local brewery. It passed into private hands in 1954 and so began its latest phase as a hotel and subsequently a restaurant. The current proprietors Jason Goy and Darren Carter are undertaking a major restoration programme on the interior of the building, creating a natural blend of Georgian architecture and colour schemes with contemporary art.

The excellent result is both stylish and charming, and the six en suite guest bedrooms combine their original splendour with modern features. The superb food is very much part of the appeal of Bowlish House. Lunch offers the choice of à la carte and set menus, while dinner is a grander affair with a seasonal two- or three-course table d'hote menu; the excellent food is enhanced by well-chosen wines and friendly, efficient service. The hotel is open to residents and non-residents for lunch, dinner, morning coffee and afternoon tea, and a function suite is available for special occasions. All rooms at the hotel are strictly non-smoking.
