Easy to find between the historic town centre and the
railway station, Enigma Pottery Studio & Gallery
is owned and run by the very talented resident ceramicists, Jenny Barton
and Everton Byfield. Jenny, who spent a large part of her life
on the Isle of Wight, creates thrown and press-moulded earthenware products inspired by the
oce
an. Everton
creates hand-built, carved, burnished and smoke-fired ceramic
vessels. Inspired by traditional African designs, his carving technique
is a development of his passion for woodcarving. Their
work, produced in their workshop in the garden, can be seen in
the Main Gallery, along with that of many regular artists of quality.
There's also an on-going programme of
eye-catching window exhibitions that is booked for many months
ahead. Courses are available for group workshops for aspiring
potters of all age groups. Between May and September, visitors
can wander among the sculptures and garden pots in the secluded walled garden. Enigma, which
is fully accessible to wheelchair users, is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, or
by appointment.
