The Blake Museum is Bridgewater's museum of local history
and archaeology, names after Robert Blake (1598-1657) Cromwell's General at
Sea and who was born in Bridgewater.
The displays include archaeology from the earliest settlements
in Bridgwater to the mediaeval port, and one on James, Duke of Monmouth who led
an ill-fated rebellion against his uncle, King James II, in 1685. Monmouth's forces
were defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor near Westonzoyland.
The drawings and paintings of John Chubb (1746-1818), a merchant and
gifted artist, provide a unique and often humorous insight into the characters of
18th Century Bridgewater. The local brick and tile industry, which employed many
local people, is also illustrated here. The products made went all around the world.
The museum holds an exciting programme of exhibitions and events
throughout the yearfor all the family, and has many photographs and research resources.
