Description:

Batsford Garden Centre is a specialist plantsman's garden showcasing many rare and unusual trees, shrubs, alpine plants, herbaceous and perennials plus a full complement of garden sundries, compost mulches, terracotta and glazed pots, seeds and gifts. The Centre offers specialist advice on its stock of Ferns, Bamboos, Japanese Maples and Magnolias. The adjacent Batsford Arboretum covers 56 acres and is one of the largest private collections of trees and shrubs in the country.

It was originally designed in the late 1800s by Algernon Freeman Mitford, later Lord Redesdale, who was influenced in his plantings by his love of the landscapes of China and Japan which developed during his diplomatic postings there earlier in the century. He imported the Buddha and other bronze statues for the arboretum and introduced features such as the Japanese Rest House, Hermit's Cave, rockeries and a 600-metre long artificial stream.
