Directions:

Two miles from Moffat on the A708, just past the traffic signals. Look out for the large dark blue signs to CRAIGIEBURN NURSERY AND GARDEN. Go up the drive and park in the Stable Yard.

Description:

The nursery was established in 1996 by Janet Wheatcroft who has travelled extensively in Europe and the Himalayas. She has introduced a number of important plant varieties to the UK.

Charming and somewhat haphazard, Craigieburn Garden and Nursery is the antithesis of the normal garden centre. The nursery takes up most of a former kitchen garden on a fine, naturally sheltered part of the garden which is flanked by some fine 200-year-old beech trees. The Craigieburn runs close by, keeping the nursery plants fresh in the summer. Within the garden are the old bothies, tiny buildings which visitors are intrigued to discover once housed the gardener and his family. One of them now recreates an authentic Sherpa home, as lived in by Nepal's heroic mountaineers. The plants for sale cover half an acre, between 600 to 700 varieties of plants filling every corner of the nursery.
