Daniel Anstis and Peter Garrad brought years of experience in the licensing and catering
business when they took over the Bullers Arms Hotel
in October 2006. Built as a typical Cornish
`long house', it has been an inn since 1856, and over
the years has become one of the best known and
best loved in the whole county. It was originally called The Kings Arms, but its name was
changed after the Boer War to commemorate the deeds of Sir Redvers Buller, who led the relief
of Mafeking. Born just over the border in Devon, he became a hero in the whole
region, and indeed to the nation.
The hotel, which stands off the A39 2 miles southeast
of Bude, is full of old-world charm, with old stone and
brick, polished dark wood, gleaming brass, period prints
and memorabilia, and lots of cosy corners. A minimum of
four real ales - Betty Stoggs, Tribute and Abbot Ale are
regulars - are available in the bar, which is open lunchtime
and evening and throughout the day Saturday and
Sunday and every day in the summer. Food is another attraction, all home made, with a tempting
range from snacks, wholesome traditional fayre and mouth watering meals in the bar (with
waitress service) to an altogether finer dining experience in the Bullers Restaurant. The ever
popular Sunday carvery boasts four meats and no fewer than 9 freshly prepared vegetables.
For guests staying awhile, the hotel has eight
well-furnished rooms of various sizes, all with en
suite facilities and available on a B&B or
Dinner, B&B basis. Tourists will find plenty to
discover in the area, beginning with the 14th
century Church of St Marwenne in the village itself. The Bullers Arms Hotel is among the top
rank of Cornish hotels, combining the best qualities of a
much-loved local, good-value restaurant and comfortable hotel.
