In rolling countryside surrounded by fields with sheep and cows, 10 minutes from the sea,
the accommodation at Carclaze Farm comprises four properties previously
owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. Faithfully restored by local craftsmen using
traditional materials, they provide an outstanding self-catering base with 1, 2
or 3 bedrooms. The largest is Owls Roost, with three bedrooms, an
antique-furnished dining room, slate-floored kitchen and a splendid living area
with a large stone inglenook fireplace. Two-bedroom Swallows Nest features a
spacious, wooden-raftered living area and a kitchen-dining area with reclaimed
pine floorboards. Two-bedroom Curlews Cottage has flag floors made of slate from
a local quarry, while the Round House, a cosy retreat for two, originally housed
the mill workings and retains many period features.
Each cottage has its own private garden with table, chairs and barbeque facilities. There
is ample off road safe parking and storage is available for bicycles, surf boards
etc. An old stone barn contains a table tennis table, children's games and toys, also
a washing machine and dryer area for the occupants of Curlew and the
Round House. Water comes from a private bore hole in the grounds (tested
regularly by NCD Council), and in the meadow are a pony, sheep, goats, geese,
chickens and ducks - guests can help with the morning feed. There is a large play
area for children with a wooden climbing frame, wendy house etc. Allen and
Jean ensure that quality and cleanliness is maintained throughout and that
Carclaze's reputation remains one of the highest in North Cornwall and adds to
the pleasure of a stay at this lovely, tranquil place. ETB 4 Stars.
