Regular customers speak volumes of The Cook
Book, which offers the unusual combination of good food and interesting books, doing a fine
job of feeding the body and the mind. It is the creation of David and Philippa
James, who started The Cook Book in 2003. When looking for a new career and a
new source of income they heard of a tea shop for sale and soon thought of using
it as a means of pursuing their long-held love of books. They got to know the
best suppliers of coffee, learned how to use a proper coffee machine and took
the natural step of matching coffee with home-baked cakes. Jenny Stephens bakes
a delicious selection of cakes, familiar and less usual, every day on the
premises.
The Cook Book is open daily from 10am to 5pm, serving delicious fresh food for all tastes. Evening meals are cooked
on Saturdays throughout the year from 7pm, with regular themed guest nights a speciality. Diners
are welcome to bring their own wine - no corkage charged, and party bookings are
accepted. Upstairs, Bosorne Books buys and sells second-hand books and also offers a repair, restoring
and rebinding service.
David and Philippa love their community, and the book they have produced,
An Uncommon Place, mixes local walks and local artists with recipes. 10% of the proceeds from the book
go towards the care of a disabled child in St Just.
