CAFÉ NATS AND THE GEORGE

Café Nats: 9/11 Market street, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 6JY

The George: The Square, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 6AZ

Tel: 01298 24711

These two well known and well respected premises are in the heart of Buxton, and are well worth seeking out for their friendly atmosphere and great value for money. Both are owned and managed by Sue and Mike Jordan, who take a great pride in the two places popularity and the down-to-earth, competitive prices they offer to locals and visitors alike.

Café Nats is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm and 10am to 3pm on Sunday (closed on bank holidays). Here you can enjoy a drink, a snack or a full meal in surroundings that marry the traditional with the contemporary. Everything from a drink and light snack to a hearty meal is available. The Café is a member of the Peak Cuisine Group, and booking is advisable in the evenings. All the produce is sourced locally wherever possible. It also has five en suite rooms on offer, and all are cosy and comfortable, and available all year round. This makes it the perfect base from which to explore the Peak District National Park and the beautiful county of Derbyshire as well.

The George stands close to the famous Buxton Opera House, and parts of it date back to the 1600s. George Washington once stayed here, though the pub got its name from one of the kings rather than from him. The interior is everything a traditional pub should be - warm, welcoming and cosy. Traditional features such as exposed stone, low ceilings and handsome, open fireplaces combine with modern standards of service to create a pub that is well worth seeking out.

It has six real ales on offer at any one time, most coming from micro-breweries, and they are ever changing, the regular is Pale Rider. So make sure to visit more than once if you're a fan! The pub is also in the Good Beer Guide, and is open all day and every day. It sells good, honest English food that is immaculately cooked and presented. During the week, at lunchtimes, it is served until 3pm, and at weekends until 4pm. You can also eat in the evenings by prior arrangement. At least twice a week there is regular live entertainment, and you should ring for details.

This is a lively and cheerful pub that values tradition while still being committed to modern standards. The regulars (and there are many of them!) will offer you a very warm welcome. So come on in and enjoy a refreshing pint, or, if you`re driving, a soft drink while chatting to the locals. You won`t be disappointed!
