The former coaching inn of Bull I' th' Thorn
dates back to 1472, with parts that may even
date back to the 12th century, making it one of the
most historic inns in Derbyshire. Today it still
retains many of its original features, though it
now combines them with modern standards of service and outstanding value
for money. It has three double en suite rooms and these
are beautifully furnished and decorated. The whole inn has a
warmth that is due in no small part to mine hosts Annette and
Graeme Maltby-Baker, who have created a place that is
renowned throughout the area for its food and drink. It is open every
day with the exception of Mondays, though it opens on bank
holiday Mondays. It offers one real ale at the bar - Robinson's Unicorn,
as well as a wide array of beers, lagers, wines and spirits.
Food is served 12 noon - 2.30pm and 5.30pm - 8.45pm
and all day weekends. Graeme is the chef, and he uses
locally sourced, fresh produce wherever possible. There is a menu
and a daily specials board. You are well advised to book at
weekends. Children are most welcome, and all credit and debit cards,
with the exception of American Express and Diners, are accepted.
To the rear is a rare breeds farm, which opens in the
summer months. There is also a caravanning and camping site
(with showers) and occasional medieval evenings are held within
the inn itself.
