The Black Horse Inn dates back to the 1690s
at least, and is a picturesque building that is full
of `olde worlde' charm, with colourful paintings
of horses on the exterior walls, and - surprisingly - a gallows that hangs over the front door! It is
on the A517, halfway between Ashbourne and Belper, close to Carsington Water,
and makes the perfect base from which to explore the attractions of an area that
is rich in heritage and history.
It is a free house, owned and run by Muriel and Michael Edwin for the last
eleven years, and they are proud of the reputation
the inn has earned, not only among locals, but visitors as well. The interior is equally
as picturesque as the outside of the building, with low beams, warm, mellow wood,
open fireplaces and featured stone walls.
It has four guest rooms on offer, all en suite and all having a four-poster bed. Such
is their comfort and attention to detail that they have been awarded four stars. Each has
a colour TV, tea/coffee making facilities, double-glazing and central heating. The bed and breakfast tariff includes a hearty, filling
full English breakfast, or something lighter if required.
Food is one of the Black Horse Inn's specialities, with Muriel presiding in
the kitchen. The menu features a wide range of delicious dishes (including a wide range
of vegetarian options) , and in season game is very popular. Everything is sourced
locally wherever possible, except for the venison, which is from Lincolnshire. On Sunday
there is a carvery, which is so popular you are advised to book in advance. Food is
served from 12 noon to 2pm over seven days, and from Monday to Saturday between 6pm
and 9.30pm and on Sunday from 7pm until 9.30pm.
Take-away is available on all the dishes, including the carvery.
Good drink is served every session, though there is no
all day opening. Four real ales are available which
change constantly, and Michael is proud of his ales, which he
keeps immaculately. So much so that the inn has featured in
the Good Beer Guide for many years, and is about to be
featured in the CAMRA beer and bed & breakfast guide. An
astonishing fact is that, since Muriel and Michael arrived at the inn, it
has featured no less than 693 real ales. Plus, of course, there is
a wide selection of beers, wines, spirits, lagers and cider,
along with soft drinks if you're driving. There is plenty of off
road parking, and a lovely beer garden. All major credit cards
are accepted, and the dining and drinking areas will present
no problems for the disabled. Please phone about
the accommodation, which is upstairs.
This is an inn that you will return to again and again!
