Featuring steep rocky gorges, vast cavems, fast running rivers, wide panoramic views and a
cable car, it is easy to understand why the
Victorian's called Matlock Bath "Little Switzerland";
however, the Heights of Abraham Country Park
and Caverns overlooks the famous spa town, and provides a unique aspect to a day out or holiday
in the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District.
The journey to the summit of the country park is easily made by taking the cable car,
adjacent to Matlock Bath railway station and car park. The cable car ticket includes all the attractions in
the grounds, as well as the two spectacular underground caverns. Tours throughout the day allow
you to experience the exciting underground world within
the hillside, with the "miner's tale' in the Great Rutland
Cavern Nestus Mine, and the multivision presentation of the
"story in the rock" at the Masson Cavern Pavilion.
The sixty-acre country park also features
woodland walks, the Owl Maze, the Explorers Challenge, play
and picnic areas, Victoria Prospect Tower, plus the High
Falls Rocks & Fossils Shop featuring Ichthyosaur remains.
When you have worked up an appetite, why not relax with a
drink on the terrace and take in the views, or enjoy a snack in
the Coffee Shop or a meal in the Woodlanders Restaurant.
So next time you are planning a trip to the
mountains, remember The Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath
"Little Switzerland" is nearer than you think.
