FOX AND GOOSE

Foxt, Staffordshire ST10 2HN

If you want the very best in food and drink in Staffordshire, then it's worth making a diversion off the A52 at Froghall, or the B5053 at Ipstones, to discover the Fox and Goose, surely an inn that can be considered one of the gems of Staffordshire. It dates from the 18th century, and its charming exterior blends in perfectly with the surrounding scenery. In fact, the views from the Fox and Goose across open countryside are truly stunning, and worth the visit alone.

It's interior is everything an English inn should be - inviting, warm, friendly and full of olde worlde atmosphere. There is a well stocked bar, plenty of old polished wood, charming prints and knick knacks on walls and shelves, and carpeted floors in many areas. Mine hosts are Louisa and Steven, who have been in charge since March 2006, but who bring a wealth of experience in the licensed trade to the place. They offer great hospitality and good cheer to all who enter the premises, whether local or a visitor.

You can eat in the conservatory-style, no smoking restaurant, which seats 42, and enjoys all the wonderful bucolic views that the place offers. The food is wonderful, as the Fox and Goose employs a professional chef, who makes sure that only the finest and freshest of local produce in season goes into the dishes. Dishes on the menu include juicy steaks with all the trimmings, Jamaica jerk chicken casserole, salmon steak with prawns and grilled gammon steaks. There is also a `bangers `n' mash' menu, featuring such dishes as Cumberland sausage, venison sausage and pork and Bramley apple sausage, with a selection of mashed potatoes and gravy. You can choose from a printed menu or a daily specials board. The bar sells four or five real ales, all immaculately kept by Steven - the regulars being Abbot and Bass, with rotating guest ales. Plus the selection of beers, lager, cider, wines, spirits and soft drinks is outstanding.

The inn is open every evening through the week, and all day on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays. Food is served every evening between 6pm and 10pm, and from 12 noon to 10pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Children are most welcome, and all credit cards are accepted. There is an off-road car park, a patio with heating to the rear and seating at the front.

So seek out the Fox and Goose in Foxt for the very best in hospitality, food and drink!
