On the main square of the busy market town of Appleby, the Tufton Arms Hotel started life in the 17th century as a coaching inn. Owned and run for many years by the Milsom family, it provides a charming, relaxing destination for an enjoyable break in the heart of the beautiful Eden Valley. Guests are welcomed with a smile at reception, which sets the tone for the whole stay. The staff have a genuine desire that their guests will have a stay that's more than just pleasant, but a time to remember. It's quite likely that visitors will quickly meet one of the owners, who speak not of guests but of `friends who come to stay'.

Good food is a byword here, and the award-winning team of chefs seek out the best and freshest local produce, which they prepare with skill and flair to create delicious dishes with a modern twist. Dinner is served in the elegant Conservatory Restaurant overlooking the cobbled mews courtyard, and diners should allow time to peruse menus that are filled with good things. Fine food deserves fine wine, and at the Tufton Arms an expertly chosen list that runs to 200 wines provides the perfect marriage for any dish. The standards of the hospitality and the cuisine are matched by the accommodation, which caters admirably for a wide cross-section of guests, from holidaymakers and shooting/fishing parties to business and corporate individuals and groups.

Each of the 22 bedrooms has its own charm and character, and the furnishings include the occasional antique piece that belonged to the Milsom farmhouse. All the rooms have en suite facilities and all the amenities expected by today's guests; the hotel is also totally geared up to banquets and conferences, and the three purpose-designed suites combine the period elegance of the rest of the hotel with up-to-date business requirements. Fly fishing and shooting can be arranged by the hotel, which has access to some of the best stretches of the River Eden and has its own driven and rough pheasant shoot.

Appleby, the old county town of Westmorland, is a delightful place that's well worth taking time to explore. The surrounding area, too, is rich in historic and scenic glory, with a number of important country houses and castles, and the beauty of the tranquil Eden Valley.
