Abbot Hall Art Gallery
forms part of a complex within Abbot Hall park and
includes work by John Ruskin and the celebrated portrait painter, George Romney,
who was born nearby at Dalton-in-Furness in 1734. The permanent collection also
includes a wide range of 18th, 19th and 20th century British paintings and
watercolours, and the Gallery hosts regular touring exhibitions.
A short
walk from the Brewery Arts Centre is the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry
which is themed around traditional rural trades of the region, such as
blacksmithing, wheelwrighting, agricultural activities, weaving, and printing.
Here, too, are recreated cottage interiors, elegantly furnished period rooms
and a reconstruction of the study in which the celebrated author, Arthur
Ransome, wrote the children's classic Swallows and Amazons.
At the
other end of the town, near the railway station, is the Museum of Natural
History and Archaeology, founded in 1796 and one of the oldest museums in the
country.
Based on
the collection first exhibited by William Todhunter in the late 18th century,
the Museum takes visitors on a journey from prehistoric times, a trip which
includes an interactive exhibit which tells the story of Kendal Castle.
The famous
fellwalker and writer, Alfred Wainwright, whose handwritten guides to the
Lakeland hills will be found in the backpack of any serious walker, was
honorary clerk here between 1945 and 1974. Many of his original drawings are on
display.
