Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary
|
|
|
|
The tropical landscaped gardens at Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter
Sanctuary, with their ponds, waterfalls and exotic plants are
home to a wide variety of exotic butterflies from
around the world that live, breed and fly freely.
The gardens are also home to small birds and other tropical creatures such as leaf cutting ants
from Costa Rica, Koi Carp and terrapins.
The complete life-cycle of the butterfly, from chrysalis to drying their wings and
making their first flight, can be studied and photographed at leisure. Outside, in
another specially landscaped garden is the otter
sanctuary where three species of otters, including the
shy native British otter, can be seen. A special underwater viewing area allows visitors
to observe these playful creatures in their
natural habitat and watching them during the
thrice-daily feeding times is particularly amusing. Both
the otters and the butterflies provide plenty of opportunity for budding wildlife
photographers to hone their skills. The butterflies and
otters can be seen daily between March and
October. Phone for winter opening times.
