Built on a massive scale inside the walls of a medieval castle, the house was once
the largest private residence in the country. The ruins, the riverside walk, the dovecotes
and the spectacular 16th century grange barn add up to
an attraction of great appeal, and the beauty is
enhanced by the re-created 17th century garden inside the Tudor walls.
The house was sacked by Cromwell's men, with Cromwell himself present, after a long
and arduous siege and the ruins include the historic Garrison gateway.
