The Roman Painted House, often dubbed Britain's buried Pompeii, dates from AD 200 and, although it was demolished in 270 by the army to make way for a fortress, it has been remarkably well-preserved. Now covered by a modern building, this excavated site reveals in excellent detail the layout of the house as well as its underfloor heating system. Originally the walls of the house were decorated with wall paintings and these have, miraculously, survived whilst the displays surrounding the excavation site not only explain the discovery of this painted house but also the development of Roman Dover.
