The Anchor Inn

Sutton Bridge, nr Holbeach, Lincolnshire PE12 9SH

Tel: 01406 350302

The Anchor Inn stands at the end of a row of houses just off the A17 east of Long Sutton, with King's Lynn to the east, Wisbech to the south and The Wash to the north. The pub dates back to 1743, and hosts Lee and Catherine keep out the welcome mat for all their customers, whether they've come for a drink in the homely, uncluttered bar or a meal in the delightful restaurant. Lee's wholesome home cooking includes excellent soups, pâtés and pies, along with super seafood specials that could include scallops. The regular food nights are very popular occasions. For Bed & Breakfast guests the Anchor has three well-priced letting rooms, and the area around the pub and the village is full of interesting things to see and do.

The region, very popular with walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers, is at the heart of the important flower and bulb-growing industry, and the local attractions include the Peter Scott Walk. King John's Lost Jewels Trail, comprising 23 miles of quiet roads, starts at Long Sutton market place and passes Sutton Bridge, where the King is said to have lost his jewels. Another interesting feature here is the swing bridge over the River Nene, built in 1897 for the Midland & Great Northern Railway and still in use. The Anchor is open lunchtime and evening and all day on summer weekends.
