A family-run hostel with an international reputation, the
Auld Shillelagh is a place where guests can relax in a warm, welcoming
and cosy atmosphere. Enjoy a drink and a snack in the bar in front of a lovely
open fire and chat with some of the friendly local people who will be happy to
share some stories and memories of this historic village. Owner Valerie Seale,
who herself comes from a very musical background, may well be encouraged to sing
you a song or even give you a rendition of the "Spoons". All in all, your stay
at the Auld Shillelagh promises to be a memorable one!
Situated about 3 miles from the bustling market town
of Ballinasloe and 1 hour from the City of Galway, the
Auld Shillelagh stands on the site of the Battle of Aughrim
which took place in July 1691 between the army of James
II (commanded by a French general) and that of William
of Orange. William's army of 18,000 confronted the
Jacobite forces numbering 24,000 and "whipped them soundly". It
was one of the most decisive and significant battles ever fought
on Irish soil. Pay a visit to the local Interpretative Centre
which holds a lot of historic memorabilia from the battle.
