If your nerves are giving trouble, And you're sorta out of cheer, Take the first bus into Aughris, To the pub beside the pier. So reads the invitation on the back of Maureen and Peter McDermott's brochure for Aughris House & Beach Bar. Occupying a traditional thatched building, the bar was a celebrated Sibin (unlicensed drinking house) in the eighteenth century when it was known as Maggie Maye's. The McDermotts have sensitively restored the premises and its flag floor and traditional wooden seating bear silent testimony to its colourful past. The old world atmosphere of the pub evokes the homely life-style of a bygone age and never fails to attract all kinds of parties, barbecues and coach tours.

Food is served every day in the bar and the specialities include fresh salmon (seasonal) which is landed daily at nearby Aughris Pier. After your meal, settle down for a chat with the locals or listen to some traditional Irish music around the turf fire. At closing time you'll feel so good, You'll want another jar!

If you are planning to stay in this glorious corner of County Sligo, Aughris House offers an excellent range of accommodation - rooms with en suite facilities, sea view and a family room are available. The house is situated on an elevated site and enjoys breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. It is provided with all the modern luxuries but is full of character and guests are assured of a friendly, family welcome. Guests can savour an aperitif in the Beach Bar before settling down to a home cooked evening meal. Weekly, weekend and family rates are available; the house is open all year and credit cards are accepted.

Aughris House is ideally suited for touring the west and northwest of Ireland. It's a good area for fishing, surfing, archaeology and swimming from a choice of unspoilt sandy beaches. There are many delightful scenic walks and cycle routes, or you could take a boat trip to Inishmurray Island. At Aughris Head, the Bird Sanctuary gives visitors the opportunity of exploring the local wildlife. Other amenities nearby include an 18-hole golf course, Seaweed Baths and an indoor Leisure Centre.
