Brigsteer is a tiny village in the shadow of Scout Scar, 3 miles from Kendal and 5 from Junction 36 of the M6 (west off the A591 or north off the A590 via Levens). The building that houses the Wheatsheaf has been an integral part of the community for almost 250 years, starting life as three cottages and a shoeing room for horses; it then became an alehouse and was first licensed in the early 19th century. It was once the focal point for the local hunt, and hunt pictures recall those days on the walls.

Now handsomely and sympathetically modernised while retaining its traditional appeal it is run in fine style by Lee Rowbotham. He and his staff make this a lovely place to visit, whether it’s for a drink on a break in a journey, a snack or a meal, or as a very comfortable base for touring the region.  The Wheatsheaf sources as much local produce as possible, using seasonal meat, game and poultry, and daily delivered fresh fish and seafood for the à la carte menus. The bar is open from 12 to 3 and from 6 to 11, and food is served anywhere in the open-plan ground floor from 12 to 2 and from 6 to 9. Two locally brewed real ales are always on tap in the bar, along with other draught and bottle beers and lagers, a good selection of wines, cider, spirits and soft drinks.

This delightful establishment has 3 luxuriously appointed en suite bedrooms for Bed & Breakfast and is classed as an AA four-star inn. In a village that is centrally located yet peaceful and relaxed, the Wheatsheaf is a perfect place to unwind and enjoy the surroundings, or to explore the many and varied attractions, both scenic and historic, that the region has to offer. These include Lake Windermere, Kendal, Latterbarrow Wildlife Reserve, Whitbarrow, Levens Hall and the National Trust’s Sizergh Castle.
