Open every evening from 8 till late, Dickie Doodles
is a magnet for lovers of good music and well-kept ales. Shaun Bainbridge dreamed of a
live music venue open seven nights a week and in
1999 he took over these premises, closed and empty
at the time, and transformed them into what has become an unqualified success with a wide appeal.
It is home to a multitude of musical talent covering many areas of the modern music spectrum
and with performers ranging from talented amateurs to well-known professionals.
The week unfolds as follows:
Monday: Acoustic jamming
Tuesday: Electric jamming (there's a super in-house sound system)
Wednesday: Traditional folk music
Thursday: New and up-and-coming bands
Friday and Saturday: Professional rock bands
Sunday: Some or all the above!
Entrance (over-18s only) is free, and drinks (cash only) include a good choice of draught
and bottled beers and lagers.
Dickie Doodles also shows arts and crafts exhibitions showcasing the work of talented
local artists and makers. Shaun is a blacksmith by trade and some of his forgework is also on
display. Stricklandgate is one of the busy narrow streets at the heart of
old Kendal, and the yards (alleyways) are a distinctive feature of the
town. These were a line of defence against the constant threat of
marauding Scots and could be sealed off by closing the single small
entrance, keeping the families and their livestock safe inside. The
Scottish threat has long since abated, and it's now tourists from around the
world who come in peace to Kendal throughout the year. And for
those who love their music, Dickie Doodles is definitely the place to head for.
