Melrose Guest House is one of the most popular and most pleasant places to stay in Ambleside. The elegant Victorian house, which is conveniently placed for the town's many amenities and attractions, has been run since April 2006 by hardworking Alan and Lynn Salter. They have made many improvements since their arrival, and their hard work, high standards and enthusiasm are already attracting return guests.

The eight guest rooms (six en suite) spread over four floors consist of four doubles, two triples, a single and a family room with a double and two single beds. All have television, radio-alarm clock, hairdryer, refreshment tray & kettle, toiletries and good fresh towels. One room on the ground floor caters for those who find stairs a problem. Breakfast is served between 8.30 and 9.15 in the splendid breakfast room. There's a buffet-style choice of cereals, toast, preserves, juices, yoghurts, tea and coffee, and the option of a full English, lighter English or vegetarian meal. The owners can provide packed lunches with a little notice; they don't serve evening meals, but there are plenty of fine eating places nearby.

The guest house is popular with walkers and cyclists as well as tourists; guests have their own front door keys and there are ample drying facilities and safe storage for bikes. A garden bench at the front is a perfect spot for taking the sun and watching the world go by. The owners have four free passes into the nearby Low Wood Leisure Complex that are available to guests; its amenities include a swimming pool, gym, Jacuzzi, steam room and outdoor hot tub. Alan and Lynn ensure that every guest soon becomes a friend and if the visit is for a special celebration they'll go to the trouble of laying on a treat in the room on arrival.
