The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel enjoys a breathtaking, isolated location at the head of the Great Langdale Valley in the heart of the Lake District. For 300 years it has been attracting walkers, climbers and tourists, and since 1984 it has been run in fine style by Neil Walmsley, himself a keen fell-runner, and his wife Jane. It takes its name from one of the most dramatic of the Lake District waterfalls, tumbling 60 feet down the nearby fell.

Guest accommodation comprises 14 warm, comfortable bedrooms, some with en suite showers, some with four-posters. The residents' lounge is a great place to relax, meet the other guests and plan the day's activities, and the hotel has a drying room for wet clothes. This marvellous place was originally an inn with a farmhouse, and the oldest part is the middle section. Other bits were added down the years and the stables were made into a dining room. At the other end, the shippon was made into what is now the Climbers Bar, incorporating the old cow stalls. In the Hikers Bar, real ales (usually at least four) are served in an ambience of real charm and character. Neil and Jane both cook, serving hearty home-made dishes on both bar and restaurant menus (non-residents should book).

In the days when charabancs brought visitors from Little Langdale over Blea Tarn Pass, they would stop at the top and blow the horn - one toot for each passenger needing a meal! The hotel became very popular with climbing clubs and a favourite venue for club dinners; great names of successive generations in the world of climbing, including Sir John Hunt, Joe Brown and Don Whillans. Clubs are still very welcome, and the hotel is the start point of several walks and climbs, including the famous peaks of Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes.
