The Station Inn is a splendid Victorian hostelry a five-minute walk from Oxenholme station and a 10-minute drive from Kendal. Business partners Andrew Hipwell and David Hughes took over the lease in August 2006, bringing almost 50 years joint experience in the catering and hospitality business. They have quickly earned a wide and growing reputation for serving high quality food and drink and providing excellent guest accommodation.

The inn is open all day, seven days a week, for drinks, which include Black Sheep and Blond Witch real ales (it's CAMRA-listed) and a good choice of foreign beers. Food is served in the carpeted bar and restaurant from 12 to 2 and 5.30 to 9 Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Dishes on the printed menu and specials board put as much emphasis as possible on seasonal local produce, and the choice really does offer plenty for all tastes and appetites, with up to 60 dishes on the main menu. Perennial favourites include Caesar salad, Cumberland sausage (very tasty, and even better with a spiced apple sauce), Lakeland lamb Henry, breast of Cumberland chicken wrapped in smoked bacon, battered haddock, scampi and steaks. Sandwiches, jacket potatoes, burgers and salad platters are among the lighter alternatives, and Sunday brings three splendid roasts. The children's menu is one of the very best, teaching the little ones to appreciate what good food is all about. The kitchen can cater for all sorts of special occasions, including weddings and birthday parties.

This is excellent walking country, and for visitors with a love of the great outdoors the Station Inn has five en suite letting bedrooms, three on the ground floor, all with television, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. Rooms are let on a B&B basis, and a generous breakfast starts the day. Good food is not the only treat for children: there's an adventure playground, with a bouncy castle on Bank Holidays, in the large garden. As well as being a top place for both food and accommodation, the Station Inn also has a thriving social side. Darts teams play in the Milnthorpe & District Darts League, and the dominoes players are equally competitive.
