The Garden House Hotel is a Grade II
listed building dating from 1812 and designed by the architect who was also
responsible for Kendal's distinguished Town Hall. He built it for a prominent
doctor of the day, and for anyone looking for a place to relax and unwind it's
just what the doctor ordered. Sympathetically modernised and refurbished to
provide up-to-date amenities while retaining period appeal, it's a great base
for a holiday spent walking, fishing, sightseeing or just sitting back and
enjoying the quiet, civilised surroundings.
Open throughout the year, the hotel has 12 en
suite bedrooms of individual appeal and various sizes, all beautifully decorated
and furnished. The tariff includes a Continental breakfast, but a traditional
English version is also available. The conservatory restaurant is open
lunchtimes and Tuesday to Saturday evenings for a fine selection of home-cooked
dishes, and the hotel has a full on-licence for residents and non-resident
diners.
The Garden House is well named, as it stands
in two acres of lovely gardens. It stands a 10-minute walk from the railway
station and short distance from the centre of Kendal. At one point in its
lifetime the house was the home of the famous naturalist, fell-walker and writer
of guide books Alfred Wainwright.
