The Sun Hotel is one of the favourite destinations in Cumbria, whether it's for a drink, a meal or a holiday in the most delightful surroundings. It was built in 1902 by the local brewery on the Walna Scar Road leading up to the Old Man of Coniston, on the old packhorse trail to the west. The brewery already owned a 16th century pub on the site, so it made sense to build the hotel next to it.

The whole place is warm, comfortable and very friendly, a tribute to the interest and effort invested by the family owners. Families with children (and pets!) are very welcome at The Sun, and the ten letting bedrooms, all with en suite or private bathroom, include three family rooms. Five cooked breakfast options get the day off to the best of starts, preparing guests for a day's walking or exploring the many and various attractions in the vicinity of the hotel. Alternative accommodation is provided in a holiday flat at the back of the hotel, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge and a mini-kitchen.

The owners are always making improvements, one of the most striking being the revealing of handsome wood panelling in the drawing room. The chefs expect their guests to work up good appetites on their excursions, and they make excellent use of locally sourced produce, including fell-bred traditional English and Scottish beef cattle, on menus that take their inspiration from both traditional English and foreign cuisines. A lovely conservatory was added in 2001, and this and the lounge look out over the terrace to the garden that runs down the hill towards the lake and the village.

The superbly restored pub is a real gem, with exposed stone walls, flagstones, beams and a splendid old range in the fireplace. It's the perfect setting for meeting or making friends over a drink - 5 real ales and 35 wines available - or enjoying something from the bar menu.
