The Bradley family - Susan, Ron and son Ian
- have held the reins at the Black Bull for more than 30 years. The inn, which dates back to the
16th century, enjoys a glorious setting at the foot of
the 800-metre Old Man of Coniston (the `big toe' of the mountain is a large piece of stone set in
the wall of the lounge). The inn has long been a favourite
with walkers and climbers, and in the convivial bar they
can quench their thirsts with the real ales produced by Ian and
his team in the brewery behind the pub. Since 1995 the
Coniston Brewing Company's brews have won numerous awards,
the ultimate accolade coming in 1998 when Bluebird Bitter
was crowned Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.
Food is also big business at The Black Bull, and
local specialities such as Lakeland lamb, Esthwaite trout
and Cumberland sausage share the menu with dishes like roast
chicken and duckling, chilli, grilled gammon and the choice from
the salad bar. Sandwiches and snacks are added at lunchtime,
and there's always a good choice for vegetarians. Food is
served every day from noon to 9 o'clock. The painter Turner,
the poets Coleridge and de Quincy and the speedboat ace
Donald Campbell have all enjoyed the inn's hospitality, and for
today's visitors touring this glorious part of the world there are
15 well-appointed en suite bedrooms.
