The Ship is a traditional country inn standing
half a mile south of Coniston, overlooking
Coniston Water on the A593 road to Torver. Built in the
late 17th century, it was once a popular venue for drovers, and hosts Graham and Nicola Belcher have retained
a fine period appeal while providing all the comforts
demanded by today's visitors. The floral displays that deck the exterior
in spring and summer have won many awards, and the bar is
a delightfully relaxed and civilised spot for meeting or
making friends over a glass or two of Hartleys XB or Cumbria Way
real ale.
Bar meals, served from 12 to 2 and 6 to 8.45 (from 5.30
in high season) range from familiar favourites such as scampi,
chilli con carne, steak & ale pie and sticky
toffee pudding to daily changing specials like mushroom &
red pepper stroganoff, salmon with hollandaise sauce
and strawberry & kiwi pavlova. The Ship is an ideal base
for touring the region or just relaxing and enjoying the
beautiful surroundings; the accommodation comprises three
double rooms and a single, let on a B&B basis. The inn is
closed Monday and Tuesday between November and March
except during Christmas week, otherwise open lunchtime
and evening, and all day on Bank Holidays and School
Holiday weekends.
