The Engine Inn is a cheerful, convivial inn
that's equally popular as a much-loved local, an
excellent restaurant and a comfortable Bed &
Breakfast hotel. Run if fine style by Chris and Karen,
the 17th century inn was formerly called the Fire Engine and took its name from the steam
engines that used to service the local mills of Cark. It stands on
the southern edge of the Lake District on the Cumbria Way, just
2 minutes from Holker Hall with its 125-acre deer park and
motor museum.
A log fire keeps things cosy in the bar, where customers
can relax over a game of pool, a glass of real aleor something
from the good wine list before their meal or while planning
the next day's activities. The Inn holds a `Cask Marque' for its
real ales which include Old Speckled Hen and Black Sheep. Drinks are served all day and food from 12 to 3 and from 6 to 9 (all
day Saturdays and School Holidays and all day until 8 on Sunday).
The chalkboard lists the day's specials, which run from
soup and super sandwiches (hot beef & onion, bacon &
brie, Cumberland sausage, prawn & smoked salmon) to haddock
in beer batter, the day's roast which may be locally reared
lamb, beef burger, steak & kidney pie, steak & ale cobbler, chilli
and lasagne. Food is available to take away in mid-afternoon
and after 9.30 (but call first). For guests staying overnight,
the inn has five en suite upstairs rooms, one suitable for a
family; the tariff includes a hearty English breakfast.
Chris and Karen are happy to discuss any
special dietary requirements and can cater for birthday
and other celebrations, buffet suppers and steam gatherings.
