The Golden Ball is a cosy, friendly pub open
all day for drinks and great bar food, and also providing a relaxed, convenient base for touring
the region. Licensees Andy and Jean took over the premises in October 2006 and have quickly
put their stamp on the place, making many improvements, creating a warm, welcoming ambience
and winning new friends all the time.
Located in the heart of Appleby and featuring
the Good Beer Guide, it is open all day, every day
for food and drink. Marstons Burton Bitter,
Cumberland Ale and two guest real ales head the list of drinks to
be enjoyed in the two bar areas or out in the newly
created secluded and sheltered garden, which is heated
and illuminated at night. Jean is the queen of the
kitchen, producing a fine variety of country-style bar
food served from noon to 8 in the evening. The board
lists the day's specials, which might include
excellent soups (cream cheese & mushroom, tomato
& rocket) and classics such as toad in the hole, cauliflower cheese, cottage pie, scampi & chips, beef stew with dumplings and
the great favourite chicken & leek pie. Children are very welcome, and all-comers are invited to
rack their brains at the Wednesday night quiz.
Appleby, the old county town of Westmorland, is well worth taking time to explore, with
walks along the River Eden, the views from the ruins of the Norman castle and the magnificent
family tombs and the historic organ in St Lawrence's Church among the attractions. The Golden Ball
has five upstairs rooms open all year round for Bed & Breakfast guests.
