The Haybergill Centre, located on the B6259
five miles south of Appleby, was created by Mick
and Maggie Hickey and opened in July 1999. It is a brilliantly conceived, fully accessible residential
venue for groups from 12 to a maximum of 30 on
training courses and conferences, retreats or holidays.
It provides exclusive use of a purpose-built, environmentally
friendly timber building, and the versatile space and
flexible working style offer freedom and choice for each
group, thus encouraging peace, inspiration, excitement
and creativity. Some of the training courses are
organised by the owners, others by the groups themselves, and
the outstanding amenities have attracted a number
of universities, colleges and top companies.
The setting is very much part of the attraction, and the
three acres of wooded grounds include areas for an open fire,
barbecue and small group activities. Red squirrels, badgers,
woodpeckers, buzzards and pheasants are among the wildlife that can be spotted
on a stroll through the grounds, and the Centre's owners can
organise walks, nature rambles, cycle rides, birdwatching, horse-riding,
fishing and golf.
The accommodation and amenities include seven rooms
with en suite showers and toilet, and three dormer rooms with shared
facilities, a spacious lounge/training room, dining room and sauna. Most of
the main bedrooms open out onto a covered veranda that
commands views down the wood-lined lawns. Most bookings are on a fully
catered basis, and all meals are created to meet individual dietary
requirements using mainly local produce; the food has won widespread praise, and
the Centre has even produced its own cookbook.
