Visitors exploring the delights of the lovely Eden Valley will find a friendly, civilised base at
the Kings Arms Hotel, whether it's for a drink, a
meal or a comfortable place for a break. The new
family owners have carried out a major programme of refurbishment, striving and succeeding
in enhancing even further the appeal of this
splendid place.
The 300-year-old former coaching inn is open all day in
summer, and lunchtime and evening in winter, and the
old-world bar is a warm, welcoming spot to enjoy a chat and a glass or two
of real ale - the choice changes constantly. Bar and restaurant
menus provide plenty of choice for hungry
customers, with many dishes based on fresh local produce.
Ten guest bedrooms - doubles, twins and triples - seven of them with
en suite facilities, can be booked on a room only
or B&B basis, and are available all year round. The hotel has fishing rights on the River Eden, and offers fishing
holiday packages. Temple Sowerby prides itself on the title `Queen of Westmorland Villages', an
accolade justified by the lovely setting in the Eden Valley. This is great walking country, offering
everything from a gentle stroll to the National Trust's Acorn Bank with its unique collection of herbs to
the hike up Cross Fell, the highest point in the Pennines.
History also abounds hereabouts: the A66 was formerly a major Roman road, marked by
a milestone that can be seen just outside the village; evidence of a Stone Age settlement has
also been found. Temple Sowerby is currently next to the busy main road, but by early 2008 a
by-pass will provide a quieter setting.
