The Royal Hotel at Dockray, which started life
as a coaching inn more than 500 years ago, nestles peacefully among the picturesque eastern fells
on the A5091 a mile and a half from Ullswater. It's
run by Tyrone Castles and his wife Michelle, who
offer excellent hospitality, Cask Marque ales, super
food and comfortable accommodation. Cumberland Ale, Black Sheep Bitter and guest ales, some
from small local breweries, are on tap to quench thirsts, and
the hosts and their chefs put local produce to fine use in
a selection of dishes served every lunchtime and evening.
The printed menu is supplemented by daily
specials such as lamb steak in a honey and mint cream
sauce, venison pie and salmon steak with lemon parsley
butter. The guest accommodation comprises ten very
well appointed en suite bedrooms, and ten more, including
two equipped for disabled guests, are due to come on stream in the autumn of
2007. The Royal has a pleasant beer garden and ample
off-road parking. The inn was originally called the Cross Keys,
and changed its name to commemorate visits by Mary Queen
of Scots on her journeys between Scotland and England. It
is still allowed to display the Scottish Royal Coat of Arms.
