Country roads lead from the A6 at Shap to the Mardale Inn at St Patricks
Well, a cosy Lake District inn dating from the early 18th century
and recently completely refurbished by the new
owners. Tucked away in the pleasant little village
of Bampton in the Lake District National Park, it's a great base for a walking or touring holiday as
well as a warm, welcoming free house open all day, every day for drinks and food.
Up to four real ales are on tap to quench fresh-air
thirsts, with Coniston Bluebird the regular brew and
recognition by CAMRA. Full service provides a good choice
of food, with a lighter daytime menu and the full
evening menu served from 6 - booking is recommended
to be sure of a table at the weekend.
Guest accommodation consists of four superbly appointed bedrooms
-
two doubles en suite, a double with private facilities and an
en suite family room. The inn is an excellent stopping point
on Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, and has books and
maps of the area for sale. The site was visited by St Patrick, who found a well and blessed it; it was
re-discovered during the refurbishment and will become a feature.
The inn is close to Haweswater, one of the few places where golden eagles can be spotted
- along with buzzards, woodpeckers, sparrowhawks and peregrine falcons. The most easterly of
the `Lakes', Haweswater is actually a reservoir, created in the 1930s to supply water to Manchester.
The inn takes its name from the village of Mardale that was flooded, along with several dairy farms,
to create the reservoir. In sustained spells of very dry weather the remains of the village can be seen.
