Set in the heart of the Eden Valley the
picturesque village of Culgaith lies between the ancient
market towns of Appleby & Penrith. The Black
Swan is a stunning 17th Century Cumbrian Inn, which
is equally popular with regulars from the
surrounding towns & villages as with the many tourists
and holiday makers who visit the Eden Valley throughout the year.
With its original oak beams, cosy open fires in winter and peaceful gardens
in summer the Black Swan could not be more accommodating. Real Ales are a
major selling point at this traditional inn, Theakstons Best Bitter is the regular ale
on offer with a guest ale changing 3-4 times a week hosting a range of locally made
ales such as a variety from Tirril Brewery. The main trade mark for this marvellous inn
is the fresh local Cumbrian produce used in their dishes. Food is a large part of
the business here and the menus truly reflect how much thought and care is put into it by the owner and head chef Richard Fenn. The
menu changes each month, therefore Richard & his wife Joanne are able to provide you with an
ever-changing variety of dishes when the produce is
at its very best. The Cheese Board has a wide selection of locally made cheese and all of
the Pork, Beef, Lamb and Chicken come from local Cumbrian farmers within a 15 mile radius.
They use as many local suppliers as possible to
bring dishes such as Home Cured Salmon with Lemon
& Dill Crème Fraiche and Wholemeal Bread,
Fresh Asparagus wrapped in Air Dried Ham or Confit
of Duck Leg coated in Sea Salt and Thyme with a Tomato Salad & Balsamic. This is just for
starters! The main courses range from Homemade Pie
of the Day to Rack of Cumbrian Lamb with Sweet Potato Mash or Roasted Monkfish Tail
to Gressingham Duck Breast on a Fondant Potato with a Rhubarb Puree and a Port Reduction. The Black Swan has a fabulous reputation
for homemade desserts; the choice ranges from Crème Brulee, Treacle Tart & Vanilla Panna Cotta
with Basil Scented Fruits.
Seven stunning newly refurbished en-suite bedrooms are also on offer with flat screen
digital TV's and tea & coffee facilities which make a
very comfortable base for visiting the Eden Valley,
Lake District, Yorkshire Dales & the historic City
of Carlisle. This friendly inn also has fishing rights
on a 4.5 mile stretch of the River Eden, famous
for trout and salmon fishing and is available to
all guests on request. It is also close to many
local attractions and activities such as boating, cycling
& golf. The renowned Settle to Carlisle Railway
also passes the village.
