Great Salkeld is a pleasant village with
picturesque 18th century cottages and farmhouses in
red sandstone and an impressive church. The church attracts many visitors, but for those looking for
top hospitality the Highland Drove Inn is a place
of pilgrimage.
Hosts Donald Newton and his son Paul, here since 1998, are continuing a tradition that
started more than 200 years ago. John Smith's Cask and Theakstons Best Bitter head the list of
drinks served in the cosy bar, and guests can also
enjoy a pre- or post-dinner drink in a pleasant
seating area next to the new downstairs
restaurant. Chefs use local produce to great effect in
the separate bar and restaurant menus, which mix
much-loved favourites with some imaginative
variations. Among the former are haddock &
chips, ploughman's platters, burgers, steaks and
steak & ale pie, while typifying the latter are the
house special salad of black pudding, toasted
pecan nuts, preserved apricots and a red wine
dressing; seared duck breast with a duck hash brown and a cherry & redcurrant sauce; and Nile perch
on stir-fried vegetables with mussels and a creamy curry sauce. Desserts such as roasted
pineapple with a sweet white wine sabayon and coconut and Malibu ice cream keep the enjoyment level
sky high right to the end. Food is served every session except Sunday and Monday lunches.
The Highland Drove is also an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of
the region, and the five pleasantly appointed bedrooms are available all year round.
