Oak Bank Hotel is a classic Lakeland building in
a prime location in the heart of Grasmere Village, just off the main A591 Windermere-Keswick
road. Built as a private residence in 1872, it has been
a hotel since the 1920s, and since Easter 2007 it
has been in the capable hands of Simon and Glynis. Open all year round except for three weeks in January, it's the perfect choice for a relaxing break,
a romantic weekend or a Lakeland holiday, and is well placed for touring this marvellous
part of the world.
The 15 high-quality bedrooms offer space, comfort and character; top of the range
are the Acorn Suite with a separate lounge area and a Jacuzzi, and the Iris Room with a
four-poster bed and a balcony looking out over the gardens, river and fells. Food gets equal
billing with the accommodation, and the dining
room and conservatory are open from 6.30 to 8.30 every evening for both residents and
non-residents. The daily changing four-course menu tempts with such
well-constructed, beautifully presented dishes such as lasagne
of smoked trout topped with smoked salmon served with a chive and lemon sauce;
pan-seared guinea fowl with roasted leeks and a grain mustard and redcurrant sauce;
crispy tower of seafood; and lemon mousse with a raspberry coulis.
Fine food deserves fine wine, and the Oak Bank's list certainly succeeds. The bar is a
cosy spot for a pre- or post-dinner drink, and guests can relax, meet and make friends
or plan the next day's activities in the two
lounges warmed in winter by cheerful open fires.
