Strands Hotel enjoys a scenic location in a picturesque village east of the A595 and close
to Wast Water, in the heart of the Wasdale Valley. Since June 2006 it has been owned and run
by Mark and Lesley Corr, who really have given the place a new lease of life. Their warm,
genuine welcome is second to none, and as news of the grand hospitality and outstanding facilities
spreads the owners are already receiving repeat bookings.
Open from 4 o'clock on Monday, then all day every day, the hotel
has two bars where guests and their friends have the choice of a
minimum of four real ales. Mark has created his
own micro-brewery that supplies 2 or 3 of his own ales,
including Errmmm Bitter and T'Errmmminator Bitter (ask Mark to
explain this!). Food is a major part of the business,
and the printed menu and daily specials board provides
a mouthwatering choice both lunchtime and evening. Typical dishes run from lamb's liver pâté, smoked salmon Benedict and air-dried ham
salad to sea bream steamed with a lime, honey and chilli marinade, roast duckling with a classic
orange sauce, braised oxtail and steak, mushroom & T'Errmmminator pie. Booking is advisable on
Friday and Saturday evenings and all evenings in peak season.
Strands also offers excellent accommodation in 11 upstairs rooms, all but one with en
suite facilities. Children and dogs are always welcome. A good traditional breakfast sets guests up for
a day discovering the local attractions, which include lovely beaches (just 6 miles away),
golf, Muncaster Castle and the Owl Centre, the Roman fort at Hardknott and the La-al Ratty
Steam Railway. The hotel has a cosy little residents' lounge, a beer garden and plenty of off-road parking.
