Gosforth is a superb start point for discovering the beautiful western part of the Lake District, with many attractions of coast and countryside more or less on the doorstep. On the Square in the centre of town, the Lion & Lamb Hotel provides a particularly friendly base for tourists, but hosts Stewart and Fiona Burgess, here since 2000, have much more to offer than a super place to stay. The hotel, in a building that dates from the 17th century, is very much at the social heart of the community, and the bar is a favourite meeting place for both locals and visitors from outside the area.

Open all day, every day, it serves up to six real ales, with Jennings Bitter and Moorhouses Bitter the regulars. Open fires keep the place cosy in the evenings or on chilly days, while tables outside catch the noonday summer sun. To the rear is an undercover area, heated and lit, where smokers can light up. A long and varied menu based as much as possible on local produce, is served every session except Sunday evening; giant fish & chips and surf `n' turf are among the most popular dishes, and special deals are available on fish night (Tuesday) and steak night (Thursday). Children are welcome in the bar and restaurant up to 9 o'clock in the evening.

The accommodation at the Lion & Lamb comprises 11 rooms of various sizes, all with en suite facilities, and a hearty breakfast sets guests up for a day's sightseeing….and there's certainly no shortage of things to see and do: Wast Water, with Nether Wasdale at its base and Wasdale Head at its tip; Calder Bridge and Santon Bridge; the delightful seaside resort of Seascale; Ravengalls on the Esk Estuary; and the charming Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, the first narrow-gauge railway in Britain.
