Just off the A5086 in Cleator, surrounded by delightful countryside, the
Grove Court Hotel was once the village's junior school. It closed around
20 years ago, when it became a hotel, and when Ian and Annie Barwise took over in December
2006 they completely refurbished the place. Anne was once a pupil at the school, and she can now give
a lesson in how to be a charming, attentive host.
The superbly appointed interior, smartly and
sympathetically modernised, has an eye-catching bar
counter and plenty of comfortable seats in which to relax and
enjoy a chat and a drink. The link with school food
is well and truly broken by the talented chefs,
who use mainly local produce in excellent dishes
served from 11.45 to 1.45 and from 6.45 to 9. The
wide choice runs from sandwiches and jacket potatoes to pub classics
- steaks and steak pie, roasts every day, lasagne, chilli con carne, battered cod and haddock, scampi, salmon, liver
& onions, chicken or beef curry, oriental chicken stir-fry-_ and always a fine variety of
vegetarian dishes. The head chef is Martyn Harding, the sous-chef Craig Andrew Brough. The Grove
Court is a popular venue for wedding receptions and other special occasions, and the impressive
function can hold up to 220 guests.
For guests taking a break, this delightful place has 15 ground-floor en suite bedrooms
of various sizes, including three family rooms; some are located in the old classrooms. Ian and
Anne can definitely chalk up a success at their splendid hotel, which is open throughout the year.
