Visitors to the Bay Horse Inn can look forward
to the warmest of Lakeland welcomes from host Matthew (Matt) Gott and his staff. This
traditional coaching inn stands on the green in the
picturesque village of Winton in the heart of the Eden Valley, just off the A685 and a mile and a half north
of Kirkby Stephen. Matt greets newcomers like old friends, and his inn is looking in immaculate
order after recent refurbishment.
Two bars, the lounge with old oak beams, brasses and a
wood-burning stove and the public with a flagstone floor and open fire, are perfect
spots for making or meeting friends over a glass or two of real ale - up to
five brews are usually available. Matt is a super chef as well as a super host,
and patrons can enjoy his home cooking from 12 to 2 and from 6 to 9, and
all day Sunday (the inn is closed on Mondays except for bank
Holidays). He offers a menu that offers something for everyone,
combining both traditional and contemporary dishes: steak & Hawkshead Bitter
pie; fish platter; pan-fried tuna steak; chicken breast stuffed with
garlic topped with cheese and chive butter; mushroom stroganoff.
Guests staying overnight have the choice of two very comfortable bedrooms
- the Blue
Room overlooking the village green and the Gold Room looking towards the Howgill Fells. Both have
en suite facilities, television and hot beverage tray, and the day starts with a full Cumbrian or
lighter continental breakfast. With its picturesque setting and outstanding hospitality, the Bay Horse is
a popular choice for any special occasion, from birthdays to weddings and funerals. The village is
the start of a number of walks, including the Nine Standards and Wild Boar fell.
