Lowbyer Manor Country House is a perfect
base for a walking, cycling or driving holiday, or a
retreat in which to relax and unwind on the fringe of
the cobbled town of Alston. When built in the late-18th century, it was part of the estates
of Greenwich Hospital for Sailors which were arraigned by King George1 from the Earls
of Derwentwater. It later became a girls' school and now it
offers a taste of luxurious country house living in nine
superbly appointed bedrooms. These range from single to King
size, which are the Stuart Room with a beamed ceiling, King
size bed and splendid views across the South Tyne River valley,
and the Derwentwater Room with a King size four-poster bed
and a view of the front garden, where a handsome sequoia
grows. Many of the beds have beautiful quilts made by a relative
of the owners Laura and Richard Elston.
Among the many plus points here are beautiful gardens and an outstanding
breakfast menu that features Cumberland sausage, black pudding,
bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms all supplied in Alston,
Claire's Home-made preserves and Nook Farm honey. The
preserves and honey can be bought to take home. Nimble-fingered
Laura makes cross-stitch items, some of them on sale as
home-made cards, and she's also a knitter - some of her scarves are
also for sale.
