The Ward family have a very warm welcome for all who visit Troutbeck Inn. This is their first venture into this type of business, but with their chef Matt Preece they have made it one of the best places to seek out, whether it's for a drink, a meal or the chance to enjoy a relaxing break in delightful surroundings.

Built as an inn in the late-18th century, it later became a hotel for railway travellers and a watering hole for farmers from the auction room next door. It's now a warm, comfortable base for walkers, cyclists and tourists as well as a much-loved local. Black Sheep, Cumberland Ale and Copper Dragon are on tap to quench thirsts in the bar, or guests can enjoy a glass of wine or a nice drop of malt whisky by the fire while making new friends or planning the day's activities. Matt is passionate about his food, relying on prime produce from local growers and farmers for his raw materials. His menus combine tried-and-trusted favourites such as battered haddock or steak & mushroom pie with seafood beignets (prawns, squid, cockles and mussels), roasted ham shanks, game casserole and wild mushroom risotto. Room should definitely be kept for a super dessert - maybe lumpy bumpy toffee pie. Lunchtime also proposes lighter options such as fishcakes, omelettes and chilli beef taco shells, and the inn has a top-notch children's menu.

Guests staying at the inn have a choice of accommodation. Six lofty, spacious, tastefully furnished rooms for B&B are in the main building, all with en suite facilities, TV and hot drinks tray. Three beautifully appointed Holiday Cottages are located in converted stables in the courtyard behind the inn. Blencathra and Saddleback each have two bedrooms, while Little Mell fell is a romantic nest for two. All have a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and comfortable living area with TV and DVD player.
