The Royal Oak enjoys a superb, picturesque location at Spark Bridge, half a mile off the A5092, at the foot of the Furness fells in the Lake District National Park. The building dates from the mid-17th century and was once an alehouse on a drovers' road, when it was known as The Foresters.

Leaseholders John and Tony took over only in May 2007, but already the place is buzzing. The hosts have plenty of experience in looking after their clientele, and the reward for that experience is a rapidly growing band of regulars. The bar is open all day, every day, for drinks, which include a minimum of three real ales - Black Sheep is the resident, accompanied by frequently changing guests. The chef prepares a fine selection of dishes for the printed menu and specials board, served from 12 to 2 and 6 to 9 daily. The choice really does cater for all tastes and appetites, with sandwiches and baguettes for quicker snacks, and other options ranging from the wonderful Morecambe Bay shrimps and Bantry Bay mussels to cod with chips and mushy peas; penne pasta with smoked salmon and cream; steaks; steak & mushroom pie; BBQ-sauced chicken breast with bacon and cheese; braised lamb shank; and vegetable kiev. Super puds round things off in style, and the food is complemented by a well-chosen list of wines, mainly from the New World.

The Royal Oak is also a lovely place to take a break from the daily routine and an ideal base for touring this beautiful part of the world. The three superior letting rooms all have en suite facilities, luxury toiletries and a beverage tray with bottled water and biscuits: Coniston has a four-poster, Hawkshead a double and a single bed, and Ullswater a double bed and two singles, making it perfect for families. A full English breakfast is served from 8.30 to 10 - and if that's too early, they'll even serve breakfast in bed!

The inn has a pleasant beer garden at the back and ample off-road parking.
