Philip Ward is the friendly, enterprising owner
and manager of the White Mare, a country
house hotel, pub and restaurant in the village of Beckermet, close to the coast between
Calder Bridge and Egremont and just a mile off the
main A595 coast road. Dating back to the early
19th century, it has considerable charm and character, and open fires in the main lounge make it a
cosy, inviting spot for a drink. Here, and in the Sports Bar at least six real ales are always on tap; the
bars are open lunchtime and evening and all day Saturday (noon to 1am) and Sunday (noon
to midnight).
With the new Bistro now open food is big business here. The
Bistro and Restaurant menus are available 7 day per
week. The chefs are kept busy producing a wide selection of food,
with daily specials, vegetarian meals, children's
dishes and special Senior Citizens menus also
being catered for: Monday is steak night; Tuesday
is curry night; Wednesday Dining around the World followed by a quiz
(with £50 jackpot), Friday is special fish night,
live entertainment on Saturday and roasts and bar meals served all day on Sunday. Philip and his
staff love parties at the White Mare and are happy to organise anything from hen and stag nights
to weddings and wakes. The inn has two approved venues for civil marriage ceremonies and
superbly appointed marquees can cater for up to 250 guests.
Pool, darts and dominoes matches are held throughout the year, and they're always on
the lookout for new players. All the major sporting events are shown in the Sports Bar, and everyone
is invited to join in the Wednesday night quiz. The restaurant is also a popular venue for local
singers and groups. The White Mare is definitely a place to tarry awhile, and B&B accommodation in
eight rooms, including a bridal suite and family rooms, is available seven days a week, with
attractive special offers at the weekend.
