The Kings Arms is situated in the heart of Bowness-on-Solway, at the western end
of Hadrian's Wall, within the Solway Marshes and close to the sea. This splendid inn is family
owned and run by David and Margaret Wiseman,
daughter Janice Milne and son-in-law David. The interior has been superbly refurbished, and the bar,
open every session in summer (most in winter) and all day Saturday
and Sunday, is a very comfortable, civilised spot for enjoying a
drink and meeting the regulars. Margaret is a terrific cook, and her
dishes are in demand every evening except Wednesday. Everything
she cooks is fresh and tasty, and her repertoire covers fish, meat,
game and vegetarian options, with a hard-to-resist apple pie among
her desserts.
The Kings Arms is also a great place for a family holiday,
and the three guest bedrooms are open throughout the year.
The ancient footpath that leads down the hill to the beach was once well trodden by smugglers,
and history abounds in this part of the world. The coast and
major Lake District attractions are within easy reach - and so
is Hadrian's Wall. Many of the cottages in Bowness contain
stones from the wall, one of them being a small inscribed altar let into
a barn near the inn. The hosts of the KA are excellent
company, and so is Joe, their New Zealand kune kune pig, whose
antics put a smile on the face of every visitor to the inn.
